Dark Horse SC Hood
The Dark Horse SC Hood is a direct-fit replacement hood for the S650/2024+Mustang, produced in double-sided carbon fiber or fiberglass. It was developed to deliver a substantial reduction in front-end mass and a measurable improvement in engine bay thermal management, without introducing the fitment and installation compromises common to aftermarket hoods.
Construction and Weight
The double-sided carbon fiber configuration weighs 21 lbs. The factory Dark Horse hood weighs 42 lbs. The result is a 21 lb reduction — a 50% decrease — removed entirely from the front overhang, forward of the front axle line. Mass removed at this position has a disproportionate effect on front-end response, weight transfer under braking, and turn-in behavior relative to weight removed elsewhere in the chassis.
The fiberglass configuration is offered for builds where the carbon weave is not required or where a painted finish is planned.
Reinforcement and OEM Hardware Transfer
The hood is reinforced across all major surfaces and at every factory mounting location. This allows the complete OEM hardware set — hinges, latch mechanism, striker, and all associated mounting points — to be transferred directly from the factory hood with no fabrication, no relocation of mounting points, and no supplemental bracketry. The reinforcement structure is engineered to carry these loads over the service life of the panel rather than relying on localized backing at mount points alone.
Pre-Drilled Hood Pins
The hood ships with pre-drilled hood pin locations and the hood pin hardware included. MAZ Muscle introduced the pre-drilled hood pin to this segment, and it remains one of the defining features of our panels.
Conventional aftermarket hoods require the installer to measure, mark, and drill the hood pin locations by hand. That process is irreversible, dependent on installer accuracy, and a common source of misaligned pins, cracked gel coat, compromised clear coat, and voided finish warranties. Our pin locations are established during production to the same tolerance on every unit. The installer performs no drilling and no modification to the hood at any point during installation.
Thermal Management
The SC profile is designed to extract heat from the engine bay through improved venting and airflow separation, reducing under-hood temperatures by up to 20%. Lower ambient engine bay temperature reduces heat soak into the intake tract, supports more consistent intake air temperatures under sustained load, and reduces thermal stress on adjacent underhood components.
Sealed Rain Guard
A full sealed rain guard is included and integrated into the hood assembly. Vented hoods commonly admit standing water, road spray, and debris directly into the engine bay, exposing the intake, electronics, and connectors to moisture. The sealed rain guard channels water away from the opening and out of the engine bay, delivering the thermal benefit of a vented design without the water intrusion risk that normally accompanies it.
The MAZ Process
Every hood is finished in-house through the MAZ Process. Each unit is checked for panel gap consistency against the fenders, cowl, and front fascia, weave alignment and symmetry across the visible surface, and surface finish quality prior to release. Panels that do not meet specification do not ship. This is the standard our customers reference by name, and it is the reason our hoods install as they should the first time.
